Getting Washi with it.....Journal HeART 15 week 7

Hello and evening all!!!

Apologies this week's post is late but better late than never eh!!

As you have probably noticed I use lots of Washi tape on my pages and although it is a beautiful addition it can be an expensive addition....or not....

It can be used for tonnes of things not just our art journals.....check this out for just some crafty ideas with tape

Traditionally Washi Tape is typically made from natural fibers, such as bamboo or hemp, but most commonly from the bark of trees that are native to Japan — the mulberry, the mitsumata shrub or the gampi tree....but as I say it can be pricey so today I want you to have a crack at making your own

I tend to make it as I go but you could premake some and store it on greaseproof papers.

What I did this week was make a masterboard of home made washi tapes...

Masterboard to me is just an A4 sheet full of designs which I can chop up and use in lots of diff projects. Always handy to have around for last minute cards of a quick canvas.

So to make my own Washi on this one I used Acrylic paints and Archival ink with stencils and stamps on different widths of cheap masking tapes. In this project I kept them neat but you could tear into lots of strips and go crazy in all diff directions :-)

You can use dimensional pastes through stencils too,  if you want but keep them fairly lightweight. I also laid scotch tape across old bookpages which neatly lifts the print - so simple but so cool.

Why not try dusting off your gelli plate too.....check this out :-)

If you want you can keep it simple and dig out your journalling pens and just doodle on to some scotch/masking tape....it really is easy and so much fun!!

Once all my tapes were paid down I added some additional stencil layers and then I got chopping up......

to create my finished page.

So this week have a toots around the internet and create yourself some Washi lurve :-) You can always add to some Washi tape in your stash to for a bit of variety.

It's a great way to customise for a specific project!

Journal HeART 15 -Week 2 Bleeding tissue technique

Welcome to week 2 of our Art Journal venture!!

What a fabulous start last week - all your pages were fantastic! Thank you for joining in!

Today its all about using journals to practice and recreate techniques that you like and want to use.

I have seen the bleeding tissue technique around the internet and pinterest and really fancied but only had one small problem - I didnt have the necessary product........so........lightbulb moment and here is this weeks Prompt...

Just because you havent got something doesnt mean you cant DO.....

So What is the bleeding tissue technique???

It is basically using specialist coloured tissue paper cut and placed onto wet paper/cardstock to create funky background patterns and designs for your journals and card making....

So as I hadn't got any I set about thinking what I could use......out came the kitchen towel and spray inks......I started out with Dylusions sprays as I wanted the really vibrant colours. For this I recommend using plain white kitchen towel rather than patterned for this incase you get unwanted patterns (though that would be quite fun if they were to bleed too!!)

Now the REALLY complex bit......seperate your kitchen towel into single ply sheets and then simply spray your chosen colours onto them before setting aside to dry completely. I batch made sheets of all my dylusions colours and also did some combi sheets......just coz I could :-)

Then it is simply a case ot cutting the tissue up and laying it onto wet pages/card/watercolour paper/ mdf ( I used ungessoed ) leaving it a short while (you can spritz some more water over at this stage if the colour is not transfering enough) before peeling it off to reveal your design.

Let it dry and then stamp/diecut as you wish - I find it cool and very funky.

As for die cutting - you need to cut several layers of tissue together as it is relatively fragile and I suggest using only cutting dies with blades. Like Sizzix and Tim Holtz dies.

Then you can get creative with your layouts.....

...and the finished page...

I also stamped an image in archival ink onto a journal page and then stamped onto the coloured tissue and cut out then laid it over and spritzed to see how this "coloured" images....

For this image I chose to try Oak House Studio Colour Chemistry Spray inks for a more subtle look......

.....the page was finished with simple stamping and tearing (I love tearing parts of pages away to reveal the, in this case black, page behind) and lyrics from one of my new songs.

As a note I did also try tattered Angels sprays .... they were a wee bit too subtle for me having looked initially promising...

 

So this weeks challenge is to either try this and then create a page with birds/song/both or have a think about a technique you'd like to try but maybe can't because you are missing a key part. Try a little lateral thinking and see if you can make a technique your own way!!

Bokeh tutorial.......

Good evening all!!

Tonight I'd like to share with you a little tutorial for my new "fave" technique - "Bokeh" :-)

I know I promised it on Boxing Day but you know how that time flies thing is....

So what is "Bokeh" ???

Well it originates from the art of photography and is basically a soft out of focus blur/haze on a photo. Often seen on pics of fairy lights at this time of year.

Surfing the net at the beginning of December I came across a couple of cards created using this effect and fell in love so I created my own version of the technique ( It is also covered in a different way/medium in January's Craft Stamper)

So how dowe do it......well it is super super easy...

What do you need?

Substrate - card/mdf blank or whatever you want to cover

Selection of acrylic paints - for this projects I used 2 shades of gold and silver

White acrylic paint

Scrap card

1 inch flat brush

make up sponge

Circle cutter/nesting circle dies

stamps

(Gesso if using Mdf - cover with this b4 step 1)

Step 1) Cover your chosen project in a couple of layers of your coloured paints. Make sure they overlap slightly and blend.

Step 2) die cut 3 different sized circles from scrapcard to form your template (I used black here to help with photography - I would suggest you use white to prevent any die leaking out of the card stock and ruining your project...)

Step 3) Squeeze out a little white acrylic and then sponge through your various circles taking turns to overlap. Be careful to only apply a thin layer of paint - if you are anxious about overloading colour you could add a small spritz of water to the white to let it down slightly. Not too much though or it may run under your stencil. As you overlap the depth of white increases. You can cover your entire project for a very soft look or you can leave some blank space like I did.

Once dry stamp and decorate to taste

.....simple easy but beautifully effective I think! 

Why not try using a pale pastel / translucent paint (a paint with see through properties ) or as suggested in CS, a chalk white ink as your Bokeh layer instead of white acrylic.

Fly by with the Artistic Stamper New stamps......

Good evening all :-)

Yay it's a finally Friday!!!! - started uber horrid here but been glorious this aftenoon...

I have been busy working on some Mag work for Creative cardmaking today and thanks to the lovely Jennie at The Artistic Stamper I had some FAB-U-LOUS new silhouette stamps to work with. They have been designed by Katy Leitch and are SOOOooooo versatile.....

I managed to grab a little time to make this up....

For this card I got busy with the old kissin' technique ...... taking a solid stamp and pressing it into another to transfer ink. For this make I used part of Lost Coast design's Moon Goddess, available here from That's Crafty to transfer a second ink colour onto Katy's stamp. I used Versafine Royal Blue and Archival Vermillion.

This card uses Katy's "Fly" stamp set, you can grab it here and check out the great Butterflies too!!

Love 'em!! Watch out for more with them next week :-) In fact I might just use this for my next card class....What do you think??

I used the headress from the moon goddess to create the patterned frame and highlighted with the Red Wink of Luna

Can you RESIST Creative Stamping.......

Good Morning all!

Chocolate Baroque Butterflies.......

Hello Bloggers! Happy Hump Day!!

Picking it up now 2 posts in 2 days eh?? lolol!!

I had an hour's play time yesterday so I got bright and breezy with the baby wipe technique again - this time with distress inks.....

The cross mask is another from Green Pepper Press and the gorgeous butterfly tree stamp is Essence of Nature from Chocolate Baroque....

A while ago I had a Gelli session and created this butterfly from a Splodgeaway mask, the tag is made with the rusted enamel technique so I combined the two and finished off the the Chocolae Baroque stamps again :-)

A quick and easy technique with Gelatos.....

Good moring all? How is your week so far?

I havent had a whole lot of craft time recently but I did manage to make this quick tag the other night using gelatos. there's a big trend for these little sticks of creamy water colourness at the moment. Easy to blend with/without water and very versatile.

For this tag I used the 50's Diner Glato set and the technique for this tag blends them directly onto cardstock and then you simply place a mask over and then wipe across with a babywipe to remove colour :-) 

Easy peasy and it also works with distress inks too! On this cardstock I didnt use a layer of gesso beneath the gelatos but certain stock will achieve better results if gessoed 1st. 

I layered a second stencil over the top using Distress inks and then stamped in archival using Lost Coast Design and StampersAnon.

The masks I used came from Green Pepper Press.

I hope this technique is useful - I look fwd to seeing your makes with this!

Eileen's class makes - made up!!!

Evening all - well nearly night lolol!!

Yesterday I promised I would share with you what we did yesterday at the lovely Eileen Godwin's class outside Coventry!

I have spent today turning the makes into actual cards - YES!!!! I actually FINISHED some class projects whoo whoo LMAO!!

So without further ado and too much waffle ..... for once ......

We had a totally fab day - I HIGHLY recommend a class with this lady if you get the chance! Altough it was a long day it was so much fun with a group of fabulously talented and lovely ladies!!

Wax Resist Technique

Hi Everyone - I hope you are all safe and sound after the last 24 hrs??

I am stopping by with a really simple but stunningly effect technique - introduced to me by the lovely Eileen Godwin :-) Check out here amazing blog HERE.

The wax resist is created by stamping in Archival and then taking a white wax crayon adding highlights before blending over with Distress Inks. Then simply polish lightly....

I started with a vintage feel using Sheena Douglass stamps....

......then I went for a wintery effect, this time using Indigo Blu's trees.....

....love how it gives a snow capped feel to the trees. My final piece is totally diff and more in the style of "teach"......using Designs by Ryn fabulous new stamps.....

   

The centre panel uses the technique and then I deliberately overworked the base card with thin layers of water on the leaves to create a roughed up distressed effect!

I hope you like the technique and are inspired give it a go - it is so easy and I hope you think effective :-)
